Neutral Shopping...

Plastic containers annoy me. Our recycling bin is constantly full of them & I am quietly skeptical about just what that are being recycled into. This year I have made a conscious effort to remember to take my own shopping (& fruit & veg) bags with me when I shop, but I find it hard to avoid a certain amount of packaged products.
Washing Powder

I think that's why I got so excited when I discovered a new shop at Prahran Market where you can bring your own containers & fill them up with natural cleaning products. I have started using their dishwashing liquid & laundry powder, which are both great so I am keen to give more of their products a try. It's been good to reuse some old containers & I like the idea that it means a couple less bottles in the recycling bin. I really wish I could buy more products this way.

If you are in the area check out Shop Neutral at Prahran Market.

That's exciting! I empty things out of containers into my storage containers after I get home from the shopping and it is frightening how much stuff I throw in the bin afterwards. Anything that reduces packaging is a GOOD THING!

Yes, I wish there were a place like that around here, sounds great.

Can I ask a silly question? What do you use for garbage bags? We use green bags most of the time, for Aldi, clothes shopping etc., except when we go to Coles, and we use those bags to put the rubbish in.

I am having these same thoughts at the moment... all those basics: rice, pasta, lentils, spices... why can't I buy them by weight without the packaging? We still throw so much away.

I like that idea it would be good to have a few more stores like that around. There is way too much packaging around the things we buy that's so unnecessary, reusing is more practical for sure.

Cool. You'll see me down at the market on the weekend filling up!! This is really great, I've been wanting to do something like this too.

Oh that is great! It always surprises me how much packaging there is, even on the natural items. I love that our natural food store sells bulk items that you can weigh into your own containers.

That is a fantastic idea! I love to be able to bring my mason jars to the bulk section of the health food stores and fill them up with beans and rice, but laundry detergent would be fantastic.

Thanks for that tip. I feel terrible about the amount of packaging we throw out weekly. I will definitely look into that.

I love hearing tales from my grandmother and mother about how they used to shop from their local suppliers. The butcher coming to the back door with the day's cuts of meat, etc. Sounds just perfect.

I am going to look for something similar in the Sydney area. Thanks for the tip.
