The Bottle or the Bird...

Or this post could be entitled, Bribery; a cornerstone of our parenting technique...

Willow loves having a bottle of milk. She doesn't have a special blankie, a dummy or a must have toy but to go to sleep she has a bottle (or two) of milk. It's a less then ideal habit given that if she wakes during the night, to help her get back to sleep she needs/wants milk. It used to be that she would wake at 5 or 6am & giving her a bottle of milk would ensure that she would go back to sleep rather than start her day, but now we seam to be up half the night playing butler to our little princess. It's exhausting,* so finally, something had to give.

Bottle

So this is the plan. Willow & I go shopping for a special new toy (the bird), followed by a discussion about how said toy is replacing the bottle, she's a big girl etc, etc. I figure we have a tough weekend ahead of us, but hopefully some unbroken sleep in our future.** And if you are worried about replacing one crutch (bottle o' milk) with another (the bird), then don't. If her big brother is anything to go by (yes, we have been here before) the toy will help get over this hurdle & then will be relegated to the soft toy graveyard in the basement. After all that's how we got the banana's in pajamas!

Big Bird

* Our fault I know...

**I may be deluding myself about the sleep, but I've got to think positive right now!

and in answer to your question, 2½ weeks to due date ~ whatever *that* means! do you want to try to pencil in another play-date? Jo x

I,m doing the opposite, I'm trying to put my daughter on the bottle from the breast. I've had a real fight on my hands (and sore boobs!!!) but I think I have got there, she drank a bottle no probs tonight!

A similar trick worked for our 2yo dummy-addict who was waking frequently. Only a night or two... hopefully you'll have the same success!

I wish I would have thought of this trick with my youngest daughter, we had a lot of sleepless, screaming nights when getting rid of her bottle.

Oh, crikey - we are moving in to that zone too. Hope all has gone swimmingly (and snoozingly) well!

How did it go? Was big bird a success? He's vry cute!
Lucky for me, I have introduced our 5 month old boy to a sippy cup as well as the boob, so I haven't had to worry about the bottle. But what will we do about the dummy!? I'll say we will be needing a big bird in the future. :)
I think the thing is that you can parent however suits you. My parents used bribery on us our whole childhood! We would get $5 an A on our report cards. Guess who got straight A's?!
A certain extended family member of ours takes the dummy straight out of our babies mouth as soon as she seems him and has told us that giving him a dummy is just lazing parenting!
So people can have their opinions, but that doesn't make them right! You want to make your child happy, that makes you a good parent! :)
Oh, I have rambled a bit, haven't I?
Good luck!

oh no need to justify what you do with willow to us! keira slept in our bed until the twins arrived as it was the only way to get to sleep!

I was using those glass bottles with the babies until I broke on in the sink and got a big glass splinter in my hand! torture! back to bad plastic for me!

So nice to know someone else is doing the same thing! My no.3 is bottles obssesed, and wakes screaming in the night till I get her one. I did the same thing with my #1 child, and it worked a treat, however I dont think #3 is easily swayed! Good luck with it.
