Rice Cereal...

This picture of Willow was taken by her big brother.

Today I am making Willow some homemade rice cereal in an attempt to start her on solids. I am not overjoyed at starting her on solids at this early stage(4 1/2 months), but anything that helps with her reflux, therefore means a happier baby girl & less washing for me, hurrah!

Making your own rice cereal from scratch is very easy & it is nice to know exactly what you are putting into their little bodies at this early stage.

To make the cereal itself all you need is some rice (brown or white) & a blender or magimix. Basically you put some rice about a 1/2 cup at a time into the blender & blend it until you have rice powder. Make as much or as little as you like (probably a little the 1st time) & store it in a container in the fridge.

To make the cereal is kind of like making porridge. You can mix it with either breastmilk, formula or water.

  • In a saucepan mix 1/4 cup rice cereal with 1 cup of liquid (breastmilk/water/formula).

  • Cook on a low heat, stirring constantly & bring to the boil.

  • Simmer & stir until creamy (about 4-5 minutes) & add extra liquid if the cereal is too thick.

This will be enough for a couple of servings when 1st starting your baby on solids & any left over can be stored in the fridge & reheated, adding extra liquid if required.

With Ryder, once he was eating a few different things I liked to use this cereal as a base & mix it with pureed apple or (for constipation) prune & apricot mix-breakfast is served!
